April 21, 2009: Head Start Policy Council meeting, CAP Central Office, 817 Monterey, St. Joseph, Mo. 6 p.m. This group is a governing body that shares responsibility for overseeing the delivery of high quality services to children and families in accordance with Head Start legislature, regulations, and policies. Through the Policy Council and Policy Committee – groups with policy-making authority at the grantee and delegate agency levels, respectively – and though the local Parent Committees, parents and other community representatives are empowered to actively participate in the shared decision-making process. April 21, 2009: Children’s Fair Social Event, Head Start and Early Head Start Home Base Programs, Civic Arena, St. Joseph, Mo., 10 a.m. Children and families are invited to participate in activity booths together and pick up information from several community resources.
April 22nd and May 20, 2009: The “Breakfast Club” at Head Start, 9th and Sacramento, 8:30-9:30 a.m.

April 23, 2009: “Focus on Kids: Parenting in Crisis” Parenting Class with MU Extension, Clinton/DeKalb Regional Office, Cameron, Mo., 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Taught by MU Extension specialist Don Miller, this class is called “Focus on Kids” and will provide strategies for parenting during difficult times. April 27, 2009: Step Up to Leadership graduation ceremony, Fountains at Corby Building, St. Joseph, Mo., 6:30 p.m. After 12 weeks learning how to be an effective board member for a cause they are passionate about, the 2009 Step Up to Leadership class will make individual presentations and receive their plaque at the graduation ceremony, April 27. Each class member will share with the audience the steps they plan to take to make a difference in our community. April 27, 2009: St. Patrick’s Early Learning Center Family Fun Night and Social, Bartlett Park, St. Joseph, Mo., 5:30 p.m. Families will play on the equipment, practice gross motor skills and participate in a parent meeting and sack lunch. Families attending St. Patrick’s Early Learning Center are invited.
April 28, 2009: Parenting Class, Plattsburg Court Yard, Plattsburg, Mo., 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Taught by MU Extension, this parenting class features topics including family strengths, managing stress and positive discipline. May 15, 2009: Outcomes are due for Prenatal to Five Head Start and Partnership Staff, for children ages 3-5. This is the date the education staff must submit completed outcomes on the children in the 3-5 year-old classrooms. These educational outcomes for the children are tabulated and reviewed by the education management and director to monitor child development and classroom achievement skills.
May 7, 2009: Youth Meeting, Keatley Center, St. Joseph, Mo., 5 to 7 p.m.

May 21 and 27, 2009: Part Day Head Start Centers and Full-Day Centers close for summer holiday. May 21 is the last day for part-day Head Start centers to be open; part-day centers will re-open in September for the school year. May 22, 2009: Poverty Simulation, Wyatt Park Christian Church, 9 a.m.
Can you survive a month in poverty? Come find out at a Poverty Simulation, where you’ll be placed into a “family” living in poverty and given a set of circumstances for your month (broken into four 15-minute weeks). Everyone who attends this intense, thought-provoking experience comes away stunned at how difficult poverty really is. There will be a debriefing and discussion immediately following the simulation. May 26-29, 2009: First Aid/CPR/ Bus Monitor training for Prenatal to Five Head Start Staff, Partnership Staff and Parents/Guardians. This is the training opportunity for staff to recertify or to take CPR/First Aid for the first time. It is also a training opportunity to train new staff or volunteers for Bus Monitoring.
May 27, 2009: Consumer Beware workshop, CAP Cameron Regional office, Cameron, Mo., 1 to 3 p.m. Understand why some people are more vulnerable to frauds and con artists. Recognize warning signs of fraud and consumer scams. Learn what to do if you are a victim.
